Description

Royal Worcester's Persian ware series drew directly on Islamic decorative arts - the relief moulding to the body references carved metalwork and architectural ornament from the Islamic world, a source that was fashionable among English ceramic manufacturers in the 1880s and 1890s as Orientalism reached its peak influence on the applied arts. The series is now among the more sought-after of Worcester's Victorian output.

The dolphin handles are a characteristic feature of the range, modelled in the round and finished in real gold - a detail that catches the light and gives the piece a sculptural quality beyond the painted surface. The body carries finely painted leaf designs, again highlighted in gilt, against the ivory ground. The underside bears the Worcester mark with the date code for 1892.

Condition

Very good for age. Very little wear or gilt rubbing, which is notable for a piece of this date. No chips or cracks.
