Summary

A Victorian sterling silver graduated Albert watch chain hallmarked 1896, complete with a sterling silver and blue enamel Scottish Rabbit Club prize fob medal by Fattorini & Sons Ltd, Birmingham 1910

Description

The watch chain is made with graduated curb links, each individually stamped with the lion passant. The T-bar and watch hook also carry part British hallmarks, with a date letter corresponding to 1896. The town mark is absent, which is normal for items of this type. The maker's mark reads HP.

Suspended from the T-bar end is a particularly interesting prize medallion awarded by the Scottish Rabbit Club. The front is decorated with a finely modelled lop-eared rabbit, surrounded by a blue enamel border bearing the club's name. The reverse features a laurel wreath enclosing a vacant cartouche - never engraved. Fattorini & Sons Ltd of Birmingham, who manufactured the fob, were one of Britain's best known makers of sporting medals, prize awards and regalia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - their work turns up across athletics, cycling, pigeon racing and, as here, the specialist world of rabbit fancy.

The fob is hallmarked for Birmingham 1910, with the Fattorini maker's mark present, very interesting antique combination.

Condition

Good antique condition with light wear consistent with age and use. The chain remains in good order throughout. The fob has minor losses to the blue enamel on the right-hand side, together with small knocks and surface scratches around the edge. Hallmarks are present across both the chain and fob.
