Description

The brooch is set in 18ct light rose gold, its warm tone deepened further by the gold backing beneath the oval glass gem, which gives the stone a rich olive cast. The gem is mixed cut - a style consistent with the mid-to-late Victorian period - and sits within a frame bordered by a plaited band of woven human hair. The combination of glass and hair, rather than a precious stone and black enamel, points toward a sweetheart piece rather than formal mourning jewellery: something given between the living, not in memory of the dead.

A small loop is fitted at the hinge end, intended for the attachment of a safety chain. No hallmarks have been found on the piece; some components - the hinge and pin - appear to be in a material other than gold, which is not uncommon in smaller sentimental pieces of this period where the setting itself was the focus. Dating is estimated at c.1860-1880.

Condition

Minor wear overall. The hair is in very good condition for its age, with some fraying at the hinge terminal. The pin shows slight rippling but the hinge and catch are both working correctly. Images are shown larger than life size to allow a thorough assessment of condition.
