Antique Victorian Coalport Cabinet Plate - Hand Painted Mediterranean Scene - Turquoise Jewelling - Manner of Boullemier - c1890 - 2888
Summary
A fine Victorian Coalport cabinet plate of c.1890, with a hand-painted Mediterranean scene to the centre, a gilt border set with jewelled turquoise enamel and raised dots, and a green Coalport backstamp to the reverse.
Description
Cabinet plates of this type represent some of the most accomplished decorative output of the Victorian porcelain industry. Coalport, by the 1880s and 1890s, had developed a distinctive house style for its exhibition and cabinet wares: rich gilt borders, often incorporating jewelled enamel work - small raised dots of coloured enamel fused to the surface to simulate gemstones - and central panels given over to figure subjects or landscape scenes painted with considerable skill.
The central scene here depicts a Mediterranean landscape, painted in the manner of Antonin Boullemier - a French-born artist who worked at Minton but whose figure and landscape style was widely admired and emulated at other English factories during the period. The piece is unmarked as to the decorator, which is not unusual for Coalport production of this date. The green Coalport backstamp dates the plate to c.1890.
The jewelled turquoise enamel border is well-preserved, with the raised dots retaining their definition and the gilt remaining bright across most of the border.
Condition
Overall very good. A small patch of discolouration to the reverse. Slight wear and a few tiny marks and scratches to the front, consistent with age and careful use. No chips or cracks.
