Description

The brooch is rectangular in form, the gilt metal frame worked with scrolled mounts at each corner - decorative without being heavy. The edges of the panel are bevel cut, catching the light cleanly. To the reverse, a standard pin and hinge arrangement, and an old collector's label - a small detail that speaks to the piece's history in a previous collection.

Victorian Mourning Dress and its Periods

Queen Victoria's forty years of public mourning following the death of Prince Albert in 1861 codified what had already been an elaborate social practice into something approaching law. Grief was worn, and worn visibly, according to a strict hierarchy of periods that governed not just dress but jewellery, accessories, and behaviour.

Full mourning - the first stage, typically lasting a year and a day for a widow - required unrelieved black. Jewellery was restricted to jet, vulcanite, or black glass (often called French jet), and pieces were expected to be sombre in both material and form. Whitby jet, carved from fossilised wood found on the Yorkshire coast, was the most prized material of this period; its warmth and depth distinguished it from cheaper imitations.

Half mourning followed, usually lasting a further six to twelve months, during which grey, mauve, and lavender were permitted alongside black, and jewellery could introduce subtler materials - gilt metal, etched glass, and hairwork pieces became appropriate. It is in this transitional period that a brooch such as this one would most likely have been worn: present enough to signal continued remembrance, restrained enough to observe the conventions.

Second mourning, the final stage, allowed a gradual return to colour and conventional jewellery, though many Victorian women - particularly widows - chose to observe mourning dress for far longer than convention required. The market for mourning jewellery was consequently substantial, and pieces ranged from the deeply personal (hairwork lockets, memorial rings) to the more broadly decorative, worn as much as a social signal as an expression of private grief.
