A mid-19th century provincial mahogany cutlery tray of two division form with a central cut out handle, pegged and nailed construction, dating to c.1850-80.

Description

The tray is divided into two sections by a central divider, the handle cut directly from the wood. The ends are slightly inset and the construction is pegged and nailed, the joinery honest and built to last rather than to impress. The mahogany has accumulated a deep usage patina over its working life, the surface carrying the marks of scores of years of daily use. It was likely made for a country house or farmhouse kitchen rather than a formal dining room, and it looks exactly like that.

Condition

Rustic period piece in keeping with its age and working history. Knocks and indents throughout, a couple of splits, and a small piece of wood missing at one corner join. Still sturdy and fully functional. See images for the full surface condition.
