A fine Victorian silver locket on an articulated book chain, dating to the Aesthetic period. The locket is hallmarked for Birmingham 1881 and is hand engraved with a kingfisher and geometric decoration.

Description

A particularly fine and attractive Victorian silver locket on a matching silver book chain, dating to the Aesthetic period.

The oval locket is hallmarked to the reverse for Birmingham 1881. The front is divided into engraved panels separated by geometric designs. Both main panels feature birds, one appearing to show a kingfisher above water attempting to catch a mayfly. The decoration also includes foliage and finely engraved detail typical of the Aesthetic taste.  The locket opens to reveal two glazed compartments with retaining rings and black fabric beneath. The reverse is plain apart from the hallmark.

The book chain is one of the nicest we have come across, and is unmarked but tests as silver - it is usual for only the locket to be marked. Each shaped panel link is articulated and hand engraved in the Aesthetic style, including birds, flowers, butterflies and foliage.  The reverse of the chain is plain. The necklace fastens with a spring ring closure located at the bale, which is typical for the period.

This is a fine Victorian Aesthetic period silver necklace, combining a substantial engraved locket with a highly decorative articulated book chain.

Condition

Generally good antique condition. The front of the locket has light wear. The locket hinge and closure are working well. The spring ring is a little temperamental. There are some light dents and knocks to the reverse of the locket, along with age related surface wear.
