Description

This antique Victorian sterling silver vesta case dates to 1886 and carries a full Chester hallmark.

The rectangular case has softly rounded corners and a raised central panel decorated with hand chased leaves and scrollwork. One side incorporates a vacant shaped cartouche, while the surrounding borders are engraved with geometric and foliate detail.

The hinged cap is plain across the top, and a ribbed striker is incorporated into the base.

The case carries a full Chester hallmark for 1886, including the duty mark bearing the head of Queen Victoria. The maker's mark appears to be that of Joseph Fray.

At 4 cm long, this is a relatively small example of the form and may have been intended for a lady.

Condition

Good antique condition with clear signs of period use. There is surface wear throughout, together with some indents to the base. The chased decoration remains well defined and the hinged cap operates correctly.
