Antique Vienna Porcelain Cabinet Plate - Hand Painted Cleopatra - Blue Shield Mark - c.1900 - 3266
Summary
An antique Vienna porcelain cabinet plate hand painted with a scene of Cleopatra receiving an offering, executed in the academic classical style with a neo-classical border of alternating gilt and dark blue panels, c.1900.
Description
The central scene depicts Cleopatra standing with two attendants, the composition arranged in the manner of a classical frieze - figures in profile or three quarter view, the space between them deliberate. Cleopatra is painted in a flowing dress with floral embellishments and a serpent band to her arm, the snake a recurring attribute in her iconography. The painting is well executed with confident draughtsmanship and a controlled palette; the academic classical style, which drew directly on Greco-Roman antiquity for its subjects and compositional conventions, was the dominant form for prestige porcelain decoration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and this plate sits comfortably within that style.
The border is painted with alternating panels: gilt dot detail on floral grounds, and dark blue panels with raised gold work. To the underside: the blue shield mark associated with Vienna-style porcelain production, and the title 'Cleopatra' in script. There is no signature to the main painting.
Condition
Small gilt losses to the rim bands at the top and lower sections, visible in the images. The central painting is particularly good and the overall plate is a fine example of the type.
