Summary

A late Victorian Wedgwood china cabinet plate, dating between 1878 and 1891 with the Portland mark to the underside. Hand painted to the centre with a winter landscape - a hay cart in a snowy field beside a lake, with trees and hills beyond. Cobalt blue border with embossed and applied gilt to the rim. Pattern number X1394.

Description

The plate is from a dessert service, though pieces of this quality were typically kept as display items rather than put to use at table. The cobalt blue border is richly decorated with extensive gilt work, with embossed gilt detailing around the rim giving the piece a formal, high quality finish characteristic of Wedgwood's fine Victorian production.

The central roundel is hand painted with a winter rural scene: a hay cart crossing a snowy field, with a lake and wooded hills receding into the distance. The scene is unsigned, which is entirely expected for this period - artist signatures on English ceramics were not common practice before the turn of the 20th century.

The Wedgwood Portland Vase mark to the underside dates the piece to between 1878 and 1891. Pattern number X1394 is also present. We currently have a number of matching plates and tazzas from the same service listed separately.

Condition

Very good for the period with minimal wear. A few small blemishes to the gilt, consistent with age. The white marks visible on the rim in the first image are a lighting artefact and are not present on the piece.
