Description

An early 20th century British Art Deco ring dating to around 1930. The centre is set with a square cut royal blue sapphire measuring approximately 5.63 x 5.63mm. The stone has a rich, saturated blue colour and is held within a platinum setting. The sapphire appears to be lab grown, a technology that entered commercial production during the Art Deco period and would have been a point of interest when the ring was made.

Surrounding the sapphire are twelve small diamonds arranged within a square platinum head. The outer edge of the head is finished with fine milgrain detail. The upper shoulders are also in platinum and carry small illusion style diamond details before transitioning into the plain 18ct yellow gold band. The gallery beneath the head is pierced and open, allowing light into the central stone.

Inside the band is the early British 18CT PLAT mark, indicating the combined use of 18ct gold and platinum. The combination of an 18ct yellow gold band with a platinum head is typical of higher quality British rings from the late 1920s and 1930s. Platinum was favoured around diamonds and pale stones because its cool tone blended with the settings and allowed fine, precise work such as milgrain borders and illusion detailing.

Sapphire is the birthstone for September.

The ring is supplied with the period jewellery box shown in the photographs.

Condition

Very good antique condition. The sapphire and diamond settings are secure and the ring shows only very light surface wear consistent with its age. The period box is included and shows expected wear, discolouration and ageing to the exterior and interior.
