An Art Deco 18ct gold ring set with a natural cornflower blue sapphire and eight old single cut diamonds in a pierced square head, with fine milgrain detail and a slim yellow gold band.

Description

Dating to around the 1920s, this 18ct gold sapphire and diamond ring sets a round blue stone at the centre of a sharply defined square. The sapphire measures approximately 3.5mm in diameter and has the cornflower blue colour particularly admired in early twentieth century jewellery.

Eight natural diamonds surround it, each an old single cut stone individually set within the geometric framework. Fine milgrain edging traces both the outer border and the curved internal divisions. The small openings between those divisions keep the design light without softening its outline.

The head has a contrasting silver coloured finish above the yellow gold band. The reverse is open beneath the stones, revealing the pierced construction of the mount. The head measures approximately 10.4mm by 10.25mm, while the band narrows from 1.7mm at the base to 1.4mm at the shoulders.

Inside the band is an older style British 18ct gold mark of the type encountered on early twentieth century jewellery. The ring is UK size P½, approximately US size 8 or EU size 56.

Sapphire is the birthstone for September.

Condition

Very good antique condition with light wear consistent with age. The sapphire and diamonds remain securely set, and the fine milgrain detail remains clear. The band and setting have been professionally cleaned.
