Summary

An original Art Deco ALCA ring box made in England in cream Bakelite, with a black flock ring pad and cream satin lined lid. The moulded base is marked ALCA Jewel Cases, Made in England, with patent reference P.Pat. 4726.

Description

A compact Art Deco ring presentation box made by ALCA Jewel Cases in England, dating to the 1930s. The case is moulded in cream Bakelite with a faceted octagonal form and softly stepped lid - the simple geometric shape typical of jewellery presentation boxes from the period, where the form itself was the decoration.

It opens on a metal hinge to reveal the original interior: cream satin lining to the lid and a black flocked ring pad below. The contrast between the pale outer case and the dark interior was designed to show a ring to its best advantage, and it still does.

The underside carries the moulded ALCA mark:

ALCA jewel cases are found in a variety of Bakelite colours and forms, including darker mottled examples of similar date. Cream examples in good condition are less commonly encountered.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The Bakelite case remains sound, the metal hinge functions correctly, and the original interior is present. There is one small brown spot to the cream satin lining.
