Art Deco Polish Silver Engine Turned Enamel Cigarette Case Gilded Interior Inter-War c1920s-1930s - 1196
Summary
An Art Deco solid silver cigarette case of Polish origin, decorated with engine turning and enamel work, with a gilded interior carrying an engraved inscription. Dating to the inter-war period, circa 1920s to 1930s. Bearing Polish hallmarks, with additional marks likely for silver grade and town.
Description
A well made Art Deco cigarette case in solid silver, produced in Poland during the inter-war period. The exterior is worked with engine turning across the full surface, the regular geometric pattern characteristic of the period and of the precision silversmithing traditions of Central European workshops. Enamel decoration is applied over the engine turned ground, adding colour and depth to the design.
The case is notably heavy for its size, reflecting a generous silver content. The interior is gilded and carries an engraved inscription.
The most notable feature for the collector is the hallmark. The case carries a Polish hallmark, which is a comparatively scarce find outside Poland itself and rarely encountered in the UK antique market. Additional marks are present, though not fully legible, and are likely to represent the silver grade and the assay town. The overall form, with its slim profile suited to cigarettes of the period, is consistent with Polish silverwork made for both the domestic and export markets in the 1920s and 1930s.
Art Deco silver from Poland is not as widely collected as its French or British counterparts, and pieces bearing clear Polish hallmarks represent an interesting collecting area with genuine scarcity in the UK market.
Condition
Good order with minor wear consistent with age and use. The engine turning and enamel remain clear. The gilded interior is intact. The hinge and catch operate correctly.
