Description

The teardrop is one of Peretti's most considered designs. The pendant hangs from an integrated hole through the top rather than a conventional bail, which keeps the profile clean and allows the silver to move naturally against the chain. The polished surface catches light differently depending on angle, the shape is never quite static. At 22mm this is the medium size, substantial enough to read clearly but not so large as to dominate.

The necklace carries two tags: one marked Tiffany & Co. with 925 to the reverse, the other marked Peretti and Spain to the reverse - Spain being where Peretti maintained her studio and where many of her pieces were made. The London Assay Office hallmark is overstruck to the Peretti tag, indicating the piece was imported and assayed in the UK before sale - a detail that confirms both the silver standard and the piece's authentic route to market.

Elsa Peretti (1940-2021) joined Tiffany & Co. in 1974 and over five decades produced a body of work that remains perennially popular. Trained in interior design then moving into architecture before becoming a model in Barcelona and New York, she brought a sculptor's instinct to wearable form. Her designs - the Bone cuff, the Bean, the Open Heart, the Teardrop - are studies in reduction: shapes that arrive at their final form by removing everything unnecessary. The Teardrop in particular has remained in continuous production since its introduction, which is its own argument for the design.
