Pair of Antique Japanese Satsuma Pottery Vases - Rakan Figures - Uchida - Taisho Period - 16cm - 3357

Summary

A pair of antique Japanese Satsuma pottery vases decorated with Rakan figures against a gilt ground, with raised white enamel detail and visible glaze crazing around the ungilded lower sections.

Description

Rakan figures encircle the bodies of these Satsuma vases, set against a gilt ground. Raised white enamel picks out details including their eyes, which stand out sharply against the surrounding gilding. The ungilded lower sections reveal the fine crazing of the glaze.

The pair dates to the Taisho period, 1912 to 1926. Each vase is signed Uchida to the underside, beneath the Shimazu crest within a lozenge. They stand approximately 16cm tall.

Condition

Some wear to the gilding from handling, particularly around the rims, foot rims and upper bodies. No chips, cracks or restoration.
