Pair of Antique Hanau Silver Candlesticks - Louis XVI Revival - 10cm - Circa 1900 to 1920 - 3385

Summary

A pair of antique German Hanau silver candlesticks with tapering columns, circular stepped bases and beaded borders. Their compact neoclassical form stands approximately 10cm high.

Description

Each candlestick rises from a circular stepped base edged with a neat beaded border. A tapering column leads through a moulded knop to a plain cylindrical socket and flared candle cup. The restrained neoclassical form shows a strong Louis XVI Revival influence.

Groups of historicist pseudo hallmarks are struck around both bases. Hanau silver manufacturers used marks that borrowed the appearance of earlier European silver marks as part of the historical character of their work. The groups on these two candlesticks are closely related but not identical. Such variations occur on Hanau silver, and no individual maker is attributed here.

The felt beneath one base has been carefully lifted for inspection, revealing a convex metal base coated with a green protective enamel or lacquer finish. This seals the interior construction from view. The combined weight of 188g is the total weight of the candlesticks, including their base construction, rather than a measure of silver content.

Dating to circa 1900 to 1920, they form a well matched pair in form, dimensions and construction.

Condition

Very good antique condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with age. One candlestick has a very small ding towards the upper part of the base and a few slight knocks to the column.

The felt base covering remains present. The green protective coating beneath the felt is visible where inspected.
