Antique Bernard Moore Red Flambe & Crystalline Glaze Art Pottery Plate - 0618

Summary

A Bernard Moore flambe crystalline glaze plate, circa 1910, with a distinctive orange ochre ground deepening towards the rim and a fully red flambe reverse.

Description

The flambe technique produces effects that cannot be repeated - each piece is its own outcome of fire and chemistry. On this plate, crystal fronds spread unevenly across the surface, the orange ochre ground darkening as it approaches the rim. The reverse is largely red flambe. To the reverse is Bernard Moore's painted signature mark, alongside an impressed clay mark - somewhat obscured but likely reading Mintons. Bernard Moore often worked with blanks the Minton factory during the Wolfe Street period.

Condition

A few surface scratches to the face going through the colour. A section of the foot rim has been ground, likely to remove excess frit or glaze following firing. Minor glaze imperfections from firing are consistent with the process.
