Summary

A late twentieth century sterling silver bottle coaster by Florentine silversmith Falsini Ferruccio, with a repousse band of grapevines, fruit and foliage encircling a turned hardwood base. Marked 925, with Italian star control mark and Florence assay registration number 434.

Description

A well made sterling silver bottle coaster produced in Florence in the latter part of the twentieth century. The silver body is a straight sided gallery, worked in repousse with a continuous design of grapes, vine leaves and assorted fruit, the decoration raised from the surface and covering the full height of the band between plain upper and lower borders.

The base is turned hardwood, fitted inside the silver band and formed with a series of concentric rings and a raised central boss, a classic configuration for bottle coasters that allows it to be rotated easily at the table. The wood has a warm patina consistent with it's vintage.

The maker is Argenteria di Falsini Ferruccio, a Florentine silversmith whose workshop produced high quality table silver for both the domestic and export markets. The hallmarks to the lower exterior of the band include the 925 sterling mark in an oval cartouche, the Italian star control mark, and the number 434 identifying the Florence assay office

Italian silver of this quality and period, particularly from named Florentine workshops, represents good value in the current market and makes a practical and handsome addition to a dining setting.

Condition

Very good condition. The repousse is crisp and undamaged. The silver shows patina building in the low points of the repousse, which enhances the contrast with the polished high points. The hardwood base is intact with no cracks or warping.
