Description

A sterling silver oval locket necklace in the Victorian style.

The locket has a decorative oval form with a beaded and raised border, applied ball detail around the edge and engraved foliate decoration to the front. It opens to reveal the interior compartment. One side has black paper lining. There are no glazed panels or retaining rings.

The bale is hallmarked with an import mark for Birmingham 1995, with the maker’s mark for C M E Jewellery Ltd of Leicester. The locket is also marked 925 to the inside rim. It is fitted to a sturdy and long silver chain with spring ring closure.

Photo lockets became popular during the 19th century, when advances in photography made small portrait images more accessible. They were often worn as sentimental keepsakes, holding miniature photographs of loved ones, and were closely associated with Victorian mourning jewellery as well as tokens of affection. Lockets continued to be popular into the 20th century, evolving in style but retaining their role as personal and meaningful pieces of jewellery.

Condition

Good pre-loved condition with light surface wear. The locket hinge and closure are working. The interior has black paper to one side, with no glazed panels or retaining rings.
