An antique relief moulded stoneware jug by T R Boote of Staffordshire, decorated with the 'Samuel & Eli' biblical scene on both sides, dating to c.1848-50.

Description

The 'Samuel & Eli' design takes its subject from John Singleton Copley's 1780 painting of the same name. T R Boote produced only a small number of relief moulded designs, and this is among the most sought after by collectors of the form. The scene is repeated on both sides of the jug, with an Arabic gentleman figure placed at the front to conceal the mould seam - a neat piece of design thinking. A mask head boss serves the same purpose beneath the handle.

The body is in a sandy buff tone; the design is also known in white, and versions with pewter lids were produced. The raised bracket feet are a distinctive feature of this pattern, and the moulded detail throughout is of a high standard.

To the underside of the base is a black printed royal coat of arms mark. This mark is usually accompanied by the maker's name and 'Patent Mosaic', but both are absent on this example.

Condition

Generally very good. Minor firing flaws as expected, with small surface tears in the clay. Some brown dust adhered to the handle glaze, caused during kiln firing.
