Description

A late Victorian 15ct gold ring with a particularly attractive combination of natural turquoise and split pearls. The head is arranged around a vertical row of three turquoise cabochons, framed by polished gold strapwork. To either side are small split pearls set into shaped gold panels, with applied bead details continuing the decorative treatment onto the shoulders. The contrast between the bright blue turquoise, soft pearl lustre and warm yellow gold is especially effective.

The design has a clear late 19th century character. The strapwork framing, the bead shoulder detail and the alternating turquoise and pearl arrangement are all typical of the period, but the execution here is particularly clean and the stones are well matched in colour and size.

Turquoise carried strong sentimental associations throughout the Victorian period. Combined with pearls - themselves symbols of purity and tears - it appeared frequently in pieces intended as tokens of affection, remembrance and good fortune. The ring has a solid gold band rather than a hollow or lightweight construction, which speaks to the quality of the original commission.

Inside the band are an old British 15ct gold hallmark and maker's mark JJ&, with the final character too lightly struck and later worn to determine with certainty. The hallmark is struck to the inner band. A vintage ring box is included as pictured.

Condition

Very good antique condition for the period. The stones are all present and secure, the band is in good order with only light age related surface wear.
