Chinese Carved Zitan Wood Dish - Landscape Relief - Inscribed Reverse - Scholar’s Tray - 3344
Summary
A Chinese carved zitan wood dish or scholar’s tray with a landscape in low relief, an irregular decorated rim and a chip carved reverse enclosing a rectangular inscribed panel.
Description
Trees, rocks and vegetation fill the shallow central field, carved in low relief within an irregular border of repeating foliate and wave like detail. The landscape occupies the dish rather than merely decorating its edge, giving this small object the character of a carved picture.
The reverse is extensively chip carved, with a recessed rectangular panel containing Chinese characters. The inscription appears to read 神化木, interpreted as “divine wood”.
Probably dating to the late Qing or early Republic period, the dish belongs to the tradition of Chinese scholar’s objects in prized hardwoods. Zitan’s very fine grain permits detailed carving, while its colour deepens with age towards purple brown and near black.
Condition
Age related shrinkage cracking, with several cracks across the carved face and further splits extending through the thickness of the wood, visible at the edges. There are minor losses beside some of the splits. The dish remains complete in overall form, and the carved decoration is clearly readable.
