Vintage Czech Art Deco Dragons Eye Brooch Pin With Dragons Breath Opal (B2479)

Summary

A circa 1930s Czech dragon's eye brooch in brass, with a large dragon's breath glass opal centre, pale moonstone like effect and a border of paste stones.

Description

The setting follows the outline of an eye, drawing the gaze to an unusually large dragon's breath glass opal centre. Its foil and shifting colour sit with paler, moonstone like glass, while the surrounding paste stones trace the shape of the brooch. On a piece measuring just 4cm across, it takes up a striking share of the design.

Dragon's breath is the name given to this man made glass, not a natural opal. The brass setting has a roll over safety catch. The brooch is Czech and dates to the 1930s.

Condition

Some foil backing to the glass stones has begun to oxidise, giving parts a greenish appearance. There is a gap between two of the surrounding stones near the pin end which appears original to construction.
