Description

The pendant is of rectangular bar form in polished sterling silver, with an oval aperture cut through the centre. Within the aperture sits a stylised owl in contrasting gold-coloured metal - the face worked with finely engraved feathering, prominent circular eyes and a softly polished body. The reverse of the owl is plain and visible through the open back of the pendant, a detail that gives the piece a considered, almost architectural quality.

The mark NB 925S struck to the lower edge of the pendant identifies the piece as retailed and imported into Britain by Nina Breddal, who acted as a distributor for Finnish Kupittaan Kulta jewellery in the UK market during the 1970s. Kupittaan Kulta - founded in Turku in 1919 - was one of Finland's most significant jewellery manufacturers of the twentieth century, producing work that drew on Scandinavian modernist design principles: clean geometry, restrained ornament, and high-quality metalwork. Comparable examples of this pendant form are also found with the Kupittaan Kulta anvil mark and Finland stamp, confirming the Finnish origin.

The pendant is suspended from a fine curb link chain in sterling silver, marked 925, with a spring-ring clasp. The chain measures approximately 40cm, giving a short necklace length that sits at the collarbone.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age. The chain and spring-ring clasp are in good working order.
