Description

The necklace is constructed entirely by hand - chain, panels and fittings - in pure silver, a material choice that sets it apart from most decorative Indian jewellery of the period. One panel is stamped 1000, confirming the purity; there are no maker's marks.

The panels are worked in the cannetille tradition - a technique of fine twisted and coiled wirework that creates a lacy, three-dimensional surface - and each carries decorative bosses at its centre. Four of the panels have additional smaller droppers suspended below, giving the necklace a layered, bib-like fall when worn. The chain is handmade and the piece closes with a spring ring clasp.

The blue enamel detail sits within the wirework panels, its colour providing a quiet contrast to the silver without competing with the texture of the cannetille itself. The piece dates to approximately the third quarter of the 20th century - most likely the 1960s to early 1970s.

Condition

Very good for period. As a handmade piece rather than a factory-produced item, minor variation in the wirework and panel construction is inherent to the making.
