Summary

A Japanese art pottery vase with a macro crystalline glaze, its ovoid body covered in flower, starburst and frost like formations over a graduated cream, yellow and blue ground.

Description

The softly rounded body rises from a narrow foot to a short neck with a gently raised rim. Deep blue around the foot gives way to muted blue grey and warm yellow tones, becoming creamy white towards the shoulder and neck.

Large crystalline formations spread across the surface. Some open into broad translucent fans and petals; others resolve into fine radiating starbursts and needle like growth. The crystalline effect continues inside the neck and interior rather than stopping at the rim.

Known in Japan as kesshō-yū, crystalline glaze develops visible crystals during firing and controlled cooling. Their growth produces patterns that vary from piece to piece. Faint vertical colour streaks remain visible beneath the crystal formations on this vase.

The glaze has pooled more thickly around the foot, creating small dimples, raised areas and irregularities during manufacture. The underside carries an impressed circular three star device together with the characters 三星, read Mitsu-boshi, literally Three Stars.

The vase is Japanese and dates to the second to third quarter of the twentieth century.

Condition

Very good vintage condition overall. The heavier glaze around the lower edge has natural pooling, small dimples and raised areas resulting from manufacture. Minor kiln and glaze irregularities are present elsewhere, consistent with the crystalline firing process.
