A vintage sterling silver hinged bangle with engraved scrolling floral and foliate decoration across the front, a polished reverse, slide clasp and attached safety chain.

Description

This Birmingham made bangle was produced by N. C. Reading & Co and hallmarked in 1955. Its broad front is hand cut with flowers, leaves and curved stems over a finely worked linear ground. Narrow dotted borders run along the upper and lower edges; the reverse is plain and polished.

The bangle hinges at one side and closes with a traditional slide clasp. A fine silver safety chain is permanently attached across the fastening. The maker's mark, sterling silver hallmark and date letter are struck inside the bangle.

N. C. Reading & Co was a Birmingham jewellery manufacturer active from the late 19th century. The firm is recorded at Hall Street, with earlier production associated with Warstone Lane. In the late Victorian period it was known for jewellery in its registered “Albo Silver” white metal alloy, including chains, lockets and bangles. British Museum material from the firm's earlier production includes circa 1890 bangles with original N.C.R.Co trade labels. This 1955 example is later production, hallmarked as sterling silver.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light age related surface wear. The engraved decoration remains clear and well defined. The hinge and slide clasp operate correctly, and the permanently attached safety chain is intact.
