Selby Abbey 900th Anniversary Britannia Silver Medal - Limited Edition 1324/1969 - John Pinches - C2849
Summary
A Britannia silver commemorative medal struck by John Pinches to mark the 900th anniversary of the foundation of Selby Abbey, limited to an edition of 1969 - the number a deliberate echo of the abbey's founding year. This is number 1324.
Description
The obverse features a crest with the anniversary date details; the reverse carries further commemorative text. The medal was produced by John Pinches, the London medallists responsible for a significant body of British commemorative coinage and limited edition silver work through the mid-to-late 20th century.
Britannia silver is a higher grade than sterling, at 95.8% purity - a standard with roots in early 18th century English silversmithing, here used to give the piece a material weight appropriate to the occasion. The edition was limited to 1969 examples, the total itself a reference to the abbey's foundation date of 1069.
Comes in the original hard case with the original information slip confirming the edition number.
Condition
Medal in good order with some natural toning. Case shows period wear commensurate with age.
