Description

Wedgwood's American Clipper Ships series was produced between 1976 and 1981 as a limited decorative range celebrating the great sailing vessels of the mid-19th century American merchant fleet. Each plaque in the series reproduced a significant maritime painting, printed onto fine porcelain ceramic and presented ready to hang. This example depicts the Dashing Wave.

Dashing Wave was launched at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1853 - a clipper ship of 1,054 tons, unusual among her contemporaries for having a square stern. Built originally for Samuel Tilton & Co. of Boston, she was adapted for the lumber trade in 1870. Her working life ended in 1920 when she was stranded on the mud flats at Seymour Narrows and never salvaged.

The image reproduces William Bradford's 1855 oil painting Dashing Wave, Clipper Ship off Boston Light, held by the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and reproduced here with their permission. Bradford was an American marine painter of the mid-to-late 19th century, best known for his precisely observed maritime subjects and, later, his Arctic expedition paintings. The composition shows the vessel in open water under full sail, the American flag flying from the mizzen, a lighthouse visible on the horizon to port.

The plaque carries the printed Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston mark to the reverse, along with the printed details giving the ship's history and the Bradford attribution. It is presented in a decorative gilt and brown-toned frame with a hanging wire fitted to the back.

Condition

The ceramic plaque is in very good condition. The frame has minor period wear, including small marks and rubbing to the finish, consistent with age.
