Zuni Native American Silver Brooch & Pendant - Turquoise, Coral, Jet & Mother of Pearl Inlay - Roger & Lela Cellicion - c1970s - A1047
Summary
A vintage Zuni Native American silver brooch and pendant by Roger and Lela Cellicion, inlaid with turquoise, coral, jet and mother of pearl - a signed piece from the 1970s by two artists whose work is now rarely available on the open market.
Description
The piece is worked in silver and set with channel inlay in the Zuni tradition - turquoise, coral, jet and mother of pearl arranged in a geometric composition characteristic of the style. It functions as both a brooch and a pendant: a safety pin fitting is set to the reverse, and a loop is incorporated to allow it to be worn on a chain.
It is signed to the reverse by the makers, Roger and Lela Cellicion, a husband-and-wife team from Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, who were active through the 1970s and into the 1980s. Their work sits within the broader tradition of Zuni lapidary art - a tradition defined by precision stonework and the subordination of the metal to the inlay itself. Pieces bearing their signature have become increasingly sought after as the market for mid-century Zuni jewellery has tightened in recent years.
Condition
Minor period wear throughout. Some small losses to the inlay are present and clearly visible in the images. The turquoise varies in shade across the piece, which is consistent with natural stone and the sourcing practices of the period. Both are reflected in the price.
